FTP and write access

Hello,

Perhaps it's a basic question, but I haven't found the answer myself: how do I publish files on my website using FTP? Any ftp account in my cPanel, even new ones I add, result in a read-only folder (at least from the Mac's Finder).

I suspect that may be happening because you have your configed you ftp to set the permissions when you ftp the folder. In which case it would set the chmod on the server to match the chmod on your Mac. That may not be what you want.

All folders, except pubic_html should be 755. public_html should be 750.

OK, I have re-read your question, and now think I was not answering the question you were asking. But I will leave my first answer just in case.

Are you saying that you create an ftp account and then cannot upload? Please explain exactly what you are doing. You say from finder on your Mac but finder is not an ftp client. What are you using to ftp from the Mac? For example, I use Yummy FTP for the Mac.

In fact, I had have problems to upload some files (after some time, Safari would stop sending and refreshing would also cause nothing to be sent). Actually, this is a file of 320 Mb that cause the problem. So I thought I'd do using FTP (presumably it would allow resuming).

There's the option, in the Finder, to connect to a server. While I agree that this does not give it the definition of "ftp client", I thought it should work the same (like an afp share) and I'm almost sure I was able to upload to some other ftp servers.

Following your answer, I've tried "Transmit", which I even purchased some months ago, but I forgot I had it . And... yes, I can upload the file!
There is a small problem though: I have tried twice this night (indeed, it's the morning here now) and I got 2 errors (I went sleeping, awaked twice and, in the same time, went seeing the result). The first time, I got "Error -135: socket write" and the second time "Error -134: socket read". But they are resumable and that's great, I will obviously finish the upload sooner or later!

Thank you for your help!

Yes, you will need to use an ftp client. Those two errors just sound like, well, errors.

Glad you have it working. If you have any more issues, post back.

Yes, and these two errors are happening both using Safari and Transmit (Transmit being a true ftp client), so there's something wrong anyway (but I can resume and I don't care too much except when it breaks while I sleep).

Hi,

I just wanted to follow up with you, you can use a trial version of Yummy FTP for the Mac to see if you like it. You can enable auto-reconnect for error recoveries and would likely be more suitable for larger uploads/downloads.

Just looked this up too, if you uncheck multiple connections in Yummy FTP it will act just like a "keep-alive" connection. Hope this helps.

There are a lot of great FTP programs for the Mac, I used to use Anarchie and Fetch just to name a few, I am sure if you play around in the preferences you will be able to find different ways to prevent your connection from timing out

Thanks. In fact, I think I found the problem (and it has nothing to do with the network).
The file I want to upload is located on an external hard drive. For an unknown reason, this disk always disconnects unexpectedly (I see a message saying I should not remove the device without first ejecting it).
It's very annoying, but since the errors I get are -134 and -135 (read/write errors), I think it's the reason.

Don't forget the rubber duck one! Cyberduck? Personally I still like my PC, but it works well in the mac labs and you can't forget/forgive the duck icon

Regardless glad to hear you got the problem resolved!

Thank you.
My problem isn't completely resolved, because I have to figure out why my external disk keeps disconnecting... It's not easy.

Thank you, but I don't see anything except the known message saying "You should not disconnect a disk before having ejected it" (well, I translate, english isn't my native language). I have no hint of what makes the disk vanishing (the "Console" (I'm on Mac OS X) doesn't tell anything).
I'm suspecting an USB failure (perhaps I should try a different cable?). It's odd, as the problem isn't reproductible (sometimes it happens soon, sometimes later, sometimes I'm moving my computer, sometimes not, etc.).

Thanks again, I appreciate.

make sure that the domain points to the directory on the server, and that you have a home page (which must be named index.htm or index.html)
by the way uploading to ftp IS publishing. just go to the domain name.

Without seeing the exact error its hard to trace, you might want to try and copy it down (if it is in English/or your native language) and do a google search to see if other Mac users encountered this same error.

Thank you. I have found that I should not use the Finder to do that.

Well, I have indeed searched using google (in english, using various words) but I haven't see someone with the same problem. I have also written a topic on Apple's forum, but haven't received any answer so far (well, I posted my topic this monday). Very frustrating.
Thanks for the tip.
