[Completed] Network, electrical and environmental upgrades @ NJ/MMU
Site5 maintenance notification [Planned]:
Date: 10/30/2006 - 11/03/2006 Start time: 22:00 ET Estimated end time: 06:00 ET Services/Equipment: All equipment located in NJ/MMU Type of work: Network upgrade / RPC upgrade / HVAC Purpose of work: To improve our services Impact of work: Less than 15 minutes of downtime per machine During the overnight hours of October 30th, 2006 through November 3rd, 2006 Site5 will be performing various upgrades at one of our data center locations in NJ (MMU). - The first upgrade is the network. We'll be upgrading all of our aggregation switches to dual gigabit uplinks. This will help ensure that as our network grows we'll have enough capacity on each aggregation switch to accommodate our users. This upgrade also benefits our backend backup network. - The second upgrade is power related. We're upgrading our power strips to APC remote reboot units as well as upgrading each cabinet to 2 x 30 amp electrical circuits over our existing 20 amp circuits. With the added APC units, we'll be able to remotely reboot all of our machines, rather than having to walk to each machine. This will speed up server reboots multiple fold. And the additional power is a precautionary measure and for future growth. As new servers are brought online with multiple SCSI disks, multiple core processors and the likes, these machines draw much more power. - The third upgrade is HVAC. We're migrating into a new cage in the data center that has additional cooling (multiple 30 tonne Liebert air conditioners). This will help keep our machines more stable and with the cooler operating environment, we can expect a minor to moderate increase in performance. As mentioned above, total downtime per server will be less than 15 minutes. If a machine fails to come back online or needs additional time to come back online, we will post to our forums - http://forums.site5.com. I have elected to exclude a list of servers and dates because the list is over 125 servers long and servers/dates will change as this maintenance progresses. That said, total downtime per machine will not exceed 15 minutes unless the server encounters an unexpected issue. If you have any questions please feel free to contact customer.service@site5.com or open a secure ticket at: https://help.site5.com. Please note that you are receiving this maintenance notice because you are a contact for one or more hosting accounts directly affected by this maintenance. We have experienced an unexpected and, of course, unwelcome power trip while performing the migration this evening. The issue has been resolved and those servers effected should be back up and operation within a few moments time. Thank you.

We are still seeing some issues with power for a few servers after the maintenance in the data center. We currently have technicians as well as electricians working to resolve this. We will have this corrected as soon as possible and we apologize for the inconvenience.

This maintenance went extremely well and we managed to complete everything ahead of schedule. We had some minor electrical issues, but aside from that, everything went really well.
Thank you very much for your patience. Todd |
